Before You Ride: Bike Safety Checklist
Use this checklist before every ride.
1. Helmet: Put on a helmet that sits level on your head. Tighten the straps so the helmet feels snug but comfortable. 2. Tires: Press each tire with your thumb. If a tire feels soft, add air until it is firm. 3. Brakes: Squeeze the brake levers. The bike should stop when you roll it forward a little. 4. Chain and pedals: Make sure the chain is on correctly and the pedals turn easily. 5. Seat and handlebars: Check that they do not wobble. Ask an adult for help if they are loose. 6. Reflectors and lights: If you ride near sunset or on a cloudy day, make sure reflectors are clean and lights work. 7. Quick pocket check: Carry water, a whistle, and an ID card or emergency phone number. 8. Safe start: Begin in a driveway, sidewalk, or other safe place away from traffic. Look left, right, and left again before crossing.
Tip: If anything seems broken, do not ride until an adult checks the bike.
