Pizza is one of the world's most popular foods, but its story began long ago. People in ancient places such as Egypt, Greece, and Rome ate flat breads with oil, herbs, or cheese on top. These early foods were not exactly the same as modern pizza, but they show that people have enjoyed topping bread for thousands of years.

The pizza many people recognize today grew in Naples, Italy. In the 1700s and 1800s, workers in Naples wanted a quick, filling meal they could eat without a table. Bakers sold flat rounds of dough with tomato, garlic, and sometimes cheese. When tomatoes first arrived from the Americas, some Europeans were unsure about eating them. Over time, tomatoes became a major part of pizza.

One well-known story says that in 1889, a pizza maker created a pizza with tomato, white mozzarella, and green basil. Its colors matched the Italian flag. This style later became known as pizza Margherita.

When Italian immigrants moved to the United States, they brought pizza with them. At first, pizza was mostly found in Italian neighborhoods. Later, it spread to many cities and towns. Today, people around the world enjoy many versions of pizza, from thin crust to thick crust and from simple cheese to many toppings.
